How to know if someone is flirting with you
Flirting rarely comes with a label. Here's how to read the actual signals — without overthinking every laugh and lingering look.

Flirting doesn't usually announce itself. It hides in eye contact that lasts half a second too long, in questions that go slightly deeper than small talk requires, in the fact that someone remembered something you mentioned once, weeks ago.
Look for patterns, not moments
A single compliment doesn't mean much. A single question about your weekend doesn't mean much. What matters is repetition — someone consistently choosing to create small moments of connection instead of letting the interaction stay purely functional.
Do they find reasons to keep the conversation going after the "official" reason for talking has ended? Do they tease you in a way that assumes familiarity you haven't quite earned yet? That's usually the tell.
Body language that actually means something
Angled shoulders, leaning in, mirroring your posture, laughing slightly before the joke lands — these are small, mostly unconscious signals of engagement. None of them are proof on their own. Together, over the course of a conversation, they build a pretty clear picture.
The simplest test
Ask yourself: are they investing more than the situation requires? Walking you to your car when they didn't have to. Texting first the next morning. Remembering the name of your dog. None of these are dramatic. That's the point — flirting is usually made of small, unnecessary effort.
If you're still not sure, there's a low-stakes option that works better than analysis: ask a direct, low-pressure question and see how they respond. Certainty feels better than a perfectly reasoned guess.
