Real Story #4

We were best friends for five years before one night changed everything.

Five years of nothing happening. Then it did. And now neither of us knows how to go back to what we were.

Two friends sitting on a rooftop at night, city lights in the background.

Five years. We met in a group project neither of us wanted to be in, and somehow ended up being the two people who actually showed up on time. After that: everything. Road trips, bad breakups on both sides, the kind of friendship where you finish each other's sentences without noticing.

Neither of us ever said anything, not once, in five years. I used to wonder about it in a passing way and then talk myself out of it — too risky, too good a friendship to gamble on a feeling that might just be comfort dressed up as something else.

Then, one night in June, at a rooftop party neither of us wanted to be at, we ended up talking until everyone else left. Nothing dramatic happened. We just kept looking at each other a beat too long, and eventually one of us said the thing neither of us had said in five years.

It's been three months. We're figuring it out — slowly, carefully, both of us terrified of losing the friendship if the relationship part doesn't work. Some days it feels like the most obvious thing in the world. Other days I catch myself grieving the ease we used to have, before there was something to lose.

I don't have a neat ending for this one yet. We're still in it.
