First date conversation ideas that don't feel like an interview

"So, tell me about yourself" is where good first dates go to die. Try these instead.

Two people mid-conversation at a small restaurant table.

Most awkward first dates aren't awkward because of a lack of chemistry. They're awkward because the conversation turns into a job interview — job, hometown, siblings, repeat. Nobody relaxes into a Q&A.

Ask for stories, not facts

"What do you do?" gets you a job title. "What's the most ridiculous thing that's happened to you at work?" gets you a story, a laugh, and usually a much better sense of who someone actually is. Swap fact-finding questions for story-finding ones wherever you can.

Three that actually work

  • "What's something you've gotten really into recently?" — People light up talking about a current obsession, whatever it is.
  • "What's a small thing that made you unreasonably happy this week?" — Low stakes, and it tells you a lot about what someone values.
  • "What's the most spontaneous thing you've ever done?" — Usually gets a story, and a glimpse of how they handle uncertainty.

Let silence exist

Not every gap needs to be filled instantly. A comfortable pause is a good sign, not a failure — it means neither of you is performing. Save the interview for the job you're not on a date for.

Good first-date questions don't ask for a résumé. They ask for a story.
