The "situationship" is exhausting. Here's why.

All the emotional weight of a relationship, none of the clarity. No wonder it's draining.

Two people sitting close but not touching, both looking at their phones.

You're texting every day. You've met each other's friends. You've had the "what are we" conversation, or maybe carefully avoided having it. And you're exhausted — in a way that doesn't quite make sense for something that's "not that serious."

Undefined doesn't mean effortless

The exhaustion makes complete sense once you name what's actually happening: you're investing real emotional energy — texting, planning, hoping, worrying — without the basic clarity that usually makes that investment feel safe. You're doing relationship-level work with none of the relationship-level agreements.

Why the ambiguity is the problem

In a defined relationship, most of the guessing is already settled: are we exclusive, do we check in daily, what happens if one of us likes someone else. In a situationship, every one of those questions stays open, indefinitely, which means your brain never gets to stop evaluating the situation. That's cognitively expensive, even when the day-to-day feels fine.

What to do about it

  • Notice if you're avoiding the clarifying conversation because you're scared of the answer — that fear is information too.
  • Give yourself a real timeline. "We'll see" can quietly become eighteen months if you let it.
  • Ask for what you actually want, plainly. Not as an ultimatum — as information the other person deserves too.

Some situationships resolve into real relationships. Many don't, and that's fine — as long as staying in one is a choice you're making, not a default you've drifted into.

A situationship asks for relationship-level emotional investment with none of the relationship-level clarity.
