Are you dating them — or their potential?

There's a version of them you keep waiting for. Here's how to tell if you're dating the person in front of you, or the one you're hoping they'll become.

Someone looking thoughtfully out of a window.

"He'll get there eventually." "She's just going through a hard time right now." "Once things settle down, he'll be more present." If you've caught yourself narrating someone's future self more than describing their present behavior, this one's for you.

Potential is seductive because it's safe

Dating someone's potential lets you stay hopeful without having to evaluate what's actually in front of you. It's easier to imagine a future version of someone who listens better, shows up more, communicates more clearly, than to sit with the discomfort of who they are right now.

The tell

Ask yourself honestly: if nothing about this person changed from this point forward, would you still choose this relationship? If the answer is a quiet no, you're likely dating a projection, not a person.

Growth is real — but it's not owed

People genuinely do change, and it would be unfair to say growth doesn't happen. The difference is whether you're witnessing actual change — consistent, over time — or hoping for change that's been promised but never delivered.

  • Look for evidence, not intentions. "I'm working on it" should eventually show up as something you can actually observe.
  • Give a real timeline to hope, and notice if you keep extending it.
  • Ask whether you'd recommend this relationship to a friend, based on today — not on the version you're picturing.

You're allowed to want more for someone. You're not required to wait indefinitely for them to become it.

If you're waiting for a future version of them to show up, you're not in a relationship with the person you're actually dating.
